Christiana Care Health System issued the following announcement on Dec. 5.

The Trustees of ChristianaCare honored two members with awards for distinguished service and esteemed leadership at the biannual meeting in November.

The Harrington Award

Enid Wallace-Simms received the 2019 Charles J. Harrington Award for Distinguished Service and Leadership, presented to her by Vice Chair of Trustees Phil Reese.

Wallace-Simms, who joined ChristianaCare’s Trustees in 2007, is senior public affairs manager for Delmarva Power, headquartered in Newark, Delaware.

Announcing the award, Reese recognized Wallace-Simms as “a tireless advocate for Delaware who strongly supports Delmarva’s commitment to community workforce development, education, STEM, employee volunteerism and environmental stewardship.”

He said she “exemplifies the spirit of community” with service on area boards including those of Communities in Schools, The Grand, the Governor’s Community and Volunteer Commission and as vice chair of the Delaware Advisory Council for the United States Commission on Civil Rights. She is a recipient of the YMCA’s Black Achievers in Business and Industry Award and served as the steering committee chair for several years.

As a Trustee she is a founding member of the Women & Children’s Leadership Council and active on the fundraising committee for ChristianaCare’s new Center for Women & Children’s Health, opening in 2020.

The Harrington Award was first presented in 1996 to its namesake, the late director emeritus of the ChristianaCare Board of Directors and former ChristianaCare Trustee, who was a strong proponent of service and the importance of philanthropy.

The Carpenter Award

Diane du Pont received the 2019 Carroll M. Carpenter Impact Award, presented by Chair of Trustees Penny Saridakis.

Among the many milestones in du Pont’s history of service, are her early membership in the Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center starting in 2004, leadership as chair of the Friends from 2006 to 2008, and continuing service as co-chair. The Friends’ philanthropic efforts have helped raise more than $2.4 million for cancer research and treatment.

In addition, in 2015, du Pont helped create the Young Friends of ChristianaCare, a program for high school students to learn about leadership, philanthropy and health care careers. Now in its 5th year, the Young Friends have 66 members representing 19 different high schools across New Castle County, and includes several students who are home schooled. The Young Friends received the 2019 Youth in Philanthropy Award from the Delaware/Brandywine chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

“One of the things that I love about Diane is her positive, can-do attitude,” Saridakis said. “Her culture of philanthropy and helping others is demonstrated in her children, who are following in her footsteps of giving back.”

The Carpenter award was established in 2016 to commemorate its namesake’s distinguished service as chair of Trustees from 2010 to 2016. It is given annually to a Trustee who closely emulates her vision, leadership and commitment to ChristianaCare.
